I’m not happy. My chair has just broken and the printer has still not been fixed. The company is falling apart. The boss really doesn’t seem to have a clue as to what is really going on.

A young lad started last Thursday, no one bothered to introduce him to me and they gave him a job that he had no idea how to do; why didn’t they just ask me? I could have told them that a new set of drawings had been issued so even if he did know what he was doing the drawings he was using were obsolete anyway. I don’t know why I bother sometimes.

Some of the guys and I went for a drink last night after work. No one is happy and Sally from Accounts says that she has just about had enough and is thinking of asking for a rise and if they don’t give it to her she is going to quit.

The management here just don’t have a clue, we are losing money through our inefficiencies and every time they come up with a new initiative they are so far off the mark that it just demonstrates how out of touch they really are.

I’m going to ask for a pay rise, if Sally can get one so should I.

When a company loses touch with their employees these are the sort of thoughts that start to play on the minds of individuals; the lack of appreciation, a broken chair, the blaming of ‘management’, even questioning the futility of what they are doing. Organisations have a habit of compartmentalising people, physically through offices, cubicles and workstations also in terms of responsibility. With effective and strong management to support this structure it can be productive, but as an organisation grows, and weak or inappropriate management infiltrates the management chain, it is perhaps inevitable that cracks will begin to appear.

By establishing procedures that sample the mood from different perspectives throughout the organisation good management will be able to form a rounded picture.

A senior management team that is known to have their ear to the ground will command great respect and will keep middle managers from becoming complacent knowing that they can no longer dismiss the senior managers searching “How is everything going?” question with a non-committal “Fine”; It is my experience that if someone replies with “fine” you need to dig deeper and ask if they really know what is going on.

Most principals of an organisation will not have the luxury of spending time walking the floor and discussing the issues of individuals but through online employee satisfaction questionnaires they can achieve the same benefits and almost become omnipresent.

Good communication between the employer and employee can help identify the individual and common concerns of the employees and will give the senior management team the opportunity to address root problems and not just the symptoms of employee dissatisfaction, enabling them to demonstrate to their employees that they are valued as an important resource.

Each individual organisation needs to customised their own employee survey so that it is relevant for them. I invite you to put yourself in the place of an employee and complete the short sample employee satisfaction survey, then view the results of the satisfaction survey and just think of the benefits to management being able to measure so easily the heart beat of the organization.

MiDAS is the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme, organised by the Community Transport Association U.K. (CTA) which promotes a nationally recognised standard for the assessment and training of minibus drivers. It is a membership based scheme that has been designed to enhance minibus driving standards and promote the safer operation of minibuses.

Who is it aimed at?

MiDAS training is applicable to any organisation operating or using minibuses. Member organisations range from small voluntary organisations operating one vehicle, to local authorities operating large fleets of minibuses as well as schools, colleges and universities.

How does MiDAS work?

MiDAS operates on a “cascade” approach. CTA has appointed a number of training agents, who provide training for minibus Driver Assessor/Trainers (DAT’s) nominated from member organisations.

A DAT can then assess the competence of other minibus drivers, and provide them with training on how to safely use a minibus.

What’s involved in becoming a DAT?

In order to register as a DAT, a person has to undertake a thorough driving assessment (it is essential that they are able to drive to an “above average” standard) and participation in a course lasting three days for standard minibuses and a further day for wheelchair accessible minibuses.

What’s included in the DAT’s Training Course?

The course gives information and practical experience on how to undertake a minibus driving assessment in an objective and consistent manner, how to structure on-road assessments, provide “classroom based” safety training, and refresher training.The safety training, which can be delivered on a group or individual basis, uses key learning points from a number of areas:
